What We Do

Prepare & Serve Food
We serve hot food and coffee to the street affiliated people five days a week out of the SLA food van. Along with meals, everyone receives a sandwich (SLAmwiches) and a "snack bag" containing sweets, granola bars, etc.
Cold water and drinks and sometimes fresh fruit are available on Doug's bus, where folks can sit to enjoy their meal and look at the available clothing and shoes.
Provide Clothing
As seasons change proper clothing for the outdoor living conditions is an essential part of surviving on the streets. The Bus is a great place for people to come "Shop" for their clothing needs. We are able to provide the basics (shirts, pants, socks, etc.) as well as shoes, jackets and more! All clothing comes from generous donors who help fill the bus for those in need.

Provide Essential Items
Things like tents, sleeping bags, tarps and hygiene products are also important essentials that SLA gives out to help the street affiliated folks live better. We are also able to help provide things like baby formula or animal food if someone is in need of it.
Move & Provide Furniture
We are constantly working towards supporting individuals in finding housing solutions. Once a housing arrangement can be secured, we are here to assist with furnishing their new apartments through generous donations and helping them move in.

Laundry Tickets
We partner with our local "Washomat" laundry mat in downtown Peterborough to provide free tickets so that those on the street can have access to a washer, soap and dryer. This provides much needed hygeine care in a safe and wlecoming environment. We invest aprox. $300-$400 monthly in this program.
Advocacy for Appointments
Members of our Team will occasionally accompany and support our Friends at appointments with workers, in the courts, medical or dental appointments as needed and requested. At SLA "being a partner on the journey" means coming alongside our people and helping them feel supported in all situations.
